Starting in January 2012, the label’s new PerSuit program will offer one-for-one garment giving to The Cara Program (www.thecaraprogram.org), a local mission based job training and placement program. Magnolia Bakery Opens its First Midwest Location at Block 37

Magnolia Bakery is now open! This iconic bakery, which opened its first location in the heart of New York’s West Village in the summer of 1996, has expanded to eight locations worldwide including its first Midwest location at Block 37 on State St. It is located on the first level, with a street entrance off the corner of State & Randolph.

Fans of "Sex and the City" might remember seeing Magnolia Bakery featured in an episode. From its inception, Magnolia has been a local favorite for its huge selection of classic American baked goods, vintage decor and inviting atmosphere. With nearly 120 fresh, handmade items including cupcakes ($3-3.50), cookies ($1-3), cakes ($4.50-6 slice, $32-60 whole), pies ($4 slice, $24 whole) and bars and brownies ($2.50), Magnolia’s team hand makes each dessert in small batches throughout the day without the use of preservatives or stabilizers. The LOFT is Opening a New Concept Store in Downtown Chicago

Hey there Seemore Shopping readers! It's Jen from The Fashion Revolution and I have some news to share with you. I just got wind of a new LOFT concept store opening up on Diversey in downtown Chicago. Could we ask for any more fabulous shopping spots in this amazing city? Of course we can!

The 4,500 square foot store officially opens tomorrow on August 19^th, 2011. Chicago is welcoming the LOFT with open arms and the store is showing its appreciation by giving clients who shop on opening day 20% off their full price purchase as well as a special tote as a gift with purchase (while supplies last), on purchases of $75 or more. You know you love it!

The store is a new take on the Ann Taylor Loft spaces and boasts a unique new store design - the “style closet”, which leads into the fitting rooms. Howdy Seemore Shoppers! I hope you are all having a lovely weekend. This is Jen from The Fashion Revolucion! I got wind of a great new organization and second hand shop that I wanted to share with you!

Sometimes, people have a tendency to consider the fashion industry in general, a bit vain. Yet, there are many organizations and designers that incorporate the ideals of doing good into their mission. As bad as a rap that the industry gets sometimes, there are some great organizations that use it to do good. This is where Mercy Beaucoup – the latest in high end second hand shopping – comes in.

When I heard about Mercy Beaucoup (connected to the Mercy Home) – I was absolutely interested in sharing the news. For those of you who don’t know of the Mercy Home, here is a little information on this amazing organization.

Chicago’s Mercy Home for Boys & Girls began in 1887 in temporary quarters located above a Catholic library on LaSalle Street, in the shadows of the Board of Trade Building. Fr. Louis Campbell, a Chicago priest, originally named the home St. Paul’s Home for Working Boys. Later that year, the facility was incorporated as a distinct organization within the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and renamed the Mission of Our Lady of Mercy.

When Fr. Campbell fell ill in 1889, Fr. Dennis Mahoney took charge. He raised a modest down payment and purchased a private residence at what is today 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., just west of downtown Chicago. The home has been Mercy Home’s headquarters ever since, and today lies at the heart of our boys campus.

Over the next century, Mercy Home continued to grow and innovate in response to the changing needs of Chicago’s disadvantaged young people. In 1987, Mercy Home opened a home for young women on Chicago’s South Side. That same year, Mercy Home’s Friends First mentoring program began matching trained adult volunteer mentors with children in need living throughout Chicago. (Mercyhome.org)

As someone who came from a disadvantaged background (Low inccome Latino family growing up in the West Side of Chicago to a single mother) I absolutely can connect to the mission of the Mercy Home and understand the great things that this organization can do for the community. Through education, guidance and connection, Mercy home tirelessly helps Chicago’s underprivileged children overcome some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

I was incredibly lucky that, although I had a family infested with drugs, abuse, gang activity and people living off of government subsidies, my mother had a different plan for me and my brother. She instilled that education and independence would give us lives that were entirely different than the life that she faced. These are the ideals that Mercy Home instills in its youth. Lucky for me that my mom put these seeds of an idea in my head early on and because of that I became the first in my family to ever graduate high school, move on to college and gain an advanced graduate degree and am able to work in a field that I am passionate about. Lucky for the youth, who are currently in the shoes that I was once in, that they have Mercy Home to guide them in that same direction.

The idea of Mercy Beaucoup comes directly from this ideal of instilling that education and independence are an important part of breaking the cycle of poverty. The purpose of the store is to give some of the Mercy Home young people real world work experience that they can take once they leave the home. Mercy Home doesn’t just house and shelter, but it helps help these students break the cycle of poverty to ensure future success through education and skills and has been doing so for 125 years.

Mercy Home teens work in the store and their experience is a part of their growth program. They learn about customer service, managing their time, retail, and inventory and of course a bit about fashion. The shop also helps Mercy Home raise money for their organization.

The brands that are carried in the shop range in terms of brands and style, but the items you can find are pretty much on the consignment shop level. Yet, it is important to note that ALL items have been donated. Prices range from $3-$400 and you can find items for men and women. The brands that are carried include upscale designers like Gucci as well as average RTW brands like Ann Taylor and Calvin Klein. You can also find décor, house wares and accessories.

Find Some Comfort at Lincoln Park's New Boutique "Comfort Me"

A new boutique run by a mother and her two daughters just opened on Armitage in Lincoln Park. Comfort Me, as the name states, is all about allowing shoppers to feel comfortable in every way while still staying stylish. Comfort Me seeks to cover all aspects of life, and therefore sells a little bit of everything including (but not limited to) flattering sleepwear, women's apparel, fun accessories, home furnishings and garden tools. The eclectic yet welcoming decor and unique gift ideas are a great addition and allow the store to truly comfort in every way.

I loved a ton of things that I saw in the store, and it was hard to leave without buying anything. My favorite item was a cute message in a bottle to send instead of a card. What a cool idea! Retail therapy has never felt so good. If you are need a little comfort in your life, then head on over and check it out. The boutique had it’s grand opening on June 25.

I just wanted to give you a quick update on a GREAT event that is going down THIS WEDNESDAY - July 13th from 7-9 PM in downtown Chicago. Affordable, Fresh food at the Green City Market in Lincoln Park

The Green City Market is Chicago’s only year round farmer’s market. Located in the heart of Lincoln Park, the market operates every Wednesday and Sunday from 7:30 AM- 1:30 PM, and connects local farmers and food artisans with shoppers, chefs and restaurant owners.

Often crowded with families touting strollers and small children, this popular market is unique because it is a sustainable market that takes pride in supporting local farmers and educating shoppers. Many of the farmers are certifiably organic and all are sustainable growers who try to minimize the use of chemicals in food they grow. Although the focus is on fresh produce, the market offers much more than that!

With four full rows of vendors, the offerings are pretty vast. Besides produce, expect to find homemade cheeses, pretty pastas, fresh tofu, canned goods, beautiful flowers and ready-made food including vegan plates with fresh sprouts, sweet and savory crepes, burgers and hot dogs.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, a large number of booths sell pastries and pies. But get there early. Mama Hoosier’s Pie Company was sold out of nearly everything on our last visit! Floriole has always been a huge hit at the market and a personal favorite. They started out as a booth at the market selling French pastries and became so popular that they opened their own store in Lincoln Park in 2010. They offer pastries, croissants, quiche and more!

Each booth has a large card posted that boasts information about the vendor, where they can be found, what they offer, etc. This is a really nice touch and a great way to learn about the vendors.

Overall, the prices at the market are fairly equivalent to produce prices at a local grocery store. But for the freshest produce you can get and the chance to support local farmers, it is definitely worth it.

The Green City Market is located at 1790 N. Clark St., near the intersection of Clark and Lincoln Avenue in the summer. In the winter, the market moves indoors to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum at 2430 N Cannon Dr Chicago, IL 60614.

Zac Posen Fall Collection Comes to Chicago

I was lucky enough to catch Zac Posen's quick stop off in Chicago and runway show last Wednesday night. The swanky affair was hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue and Steppenwolf Auxilary Council to benefit Steppenwolf Theatre for Young Adults. The show was a huge hit and fashionistas and socialites alike turned out for the event.

The fall collection was relatively somber, peppered with bright pops of color. In one trend, Models wore body conscious shift dresses with bright tights in primary colors and elf-like heels. Emphasis was on the waist with slight ruffles and ruching front and center on many of the looks. Posen also teetered towards ballerina references as the show drew into it's penultimate looks. Bright dresses tempered with dark tulle atop and beneath, had me feeling like I was at an anarchist's modern ballet. Gowns ranged from short and edgy to a more traditional and longer fit. A long cream colored gown with a hem of plumage was Posen at his best: elegant, ornate with a slight surprise peeping out.

But never one to take himself too seriously, Posen seemed to poke a bit of fun at the measured mood for fall by parading models down the runway with two huge dark pom-poms in their hair, reminiscent of Mini Mouse.

I love the combination of humor and beauty- well done.

I went shopping yesterday at my favorite department store, armed with a hefty gift certificate and several months of pent up desire for new clothes. Here’s what I bought: Mascara.

The financial news coming from retailers this season is bleak. We’re just not shopping like seasons past. There are a lot of reasons why consumers aren’t spending money right now — housing market woes, rising energy costs, recession fears — but let’s consider for a second that there simply isn’t very much worth buying.

When a shopping trip to Michigan Ave. is a total bust for bona fide shopaholic, something is seriously wrong with retail. Cropped jackets? So last season. Skinny jeans? We’re stocked up from two years ago. Festive dresses and tops? Everything looks straight out of “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” We live in Chicago.

Marshal Cohen, the chief industry analyst with NPD Group, is quoted on Fortune.com this week saying, “What concerns me more than any of the macro-economic issues is the lack of excitement in fashion right now. As a retailer, if you are telling me the biggest trend out there is skinny jeans, good luck trying to grow your business.” Right on Marshall.

So, what is interesting right now? Crafts including homemade items and pieces by local artists. Things that seem original because they are original. Galleries, artists’ collectives, charities, even this very site, are hosting gift fairs worth checking out.

Leave the party frocks to the California housewives.

No New Taxes

There was a posting on my neighborhood message board the other day detailing yet another new tax being proposed, this time by the Cook County Board of Commissioners who want to tax our telephones, more than they already are. Here’s a little teaser from a Web site called nophonetax.org:

“The Cook County Board of Commissioners has proposed a new tax of $48 per phone per year, which could raise some phone plans by as much as 131%! The proposed tax would apply to every phone – even to every cell phone and broadband line. If passed, this tax would hit the pocketbooks of all consumers and businesses in Cook County.”

What does this have to do with shopping? Since I have three phone lines — a land line for home use, DSL for high-speed Internet and a cell phone — taxes paid on these will jump by nearly $150 a year and I’d much rather buy myself something fun. Let’s say I add high speed Internet access to my existing cable package and cancel the land line, I’d save about $120 a year in taxes alone since I’d be getting rid of both current state and federal phone taxes and the future ones on two lines.

I could take that $120 and get myself a new cell phone, ideally putting it toward the inevitable iPhone purchase. One physical phone might not be convenient, so I could jump onto the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) bandwagon and get a handset or two to place around the house. VTech, Uniden and Motorola make some attractive ones that will get the job done.

It’s not a new pair of Jimmy Choo’s, but at least I’d be in control of my money, not Cook County.

New Shoes?

Target's done such a good job of partnering with designers, both big and small, that's its never a surprise to find well designed pieces at rock bottom prices. (It's also testament to their marketing muscle that they still get credit for designer partnerships that went nowhere fast. Philippe Starck? Todd Oldham? Cynthia Rowley? Rafe handbags? Gone in a blink of the eye, but we digress.)

It is a surprise, however, to just accidentally stumble on new high-end partnerships, as was the case this week.

While stocking up on the basics, a significant bit of signage caught our eye: Hollywould, for Target. That's right; Hollywould has added a line of shoes to the discount store's line up. We love the line but at those prices, quite a splurge. What a find, Hollywould at Target.

But our hopes were dashed pretty quickly. There are just two styles, both pumps, both in black and made from obviously cheap materials. One sported a cut lace pattern and the other was in patent with, of all things, a bow. The few handbags were slightly better, especially the evening clutches, but really what a squandered opportunity for both designer and retailer.

Luckily, the new Thomas O'Brien lamps and cool black lampshades saved the day. Not as much fund as scoring a pair of $400 party shoes for $29.99, but we'll take what we can get.

Black Friday Musings

I'm a retail geek. There, I've said it.

Forget about terms and phrases like "shopaholic" and "retail therapy," I don't just like shopping that's to simplistic a description. It's the entirety of retail -- the ever changing merchandise, the fickle consumer, the mall environment and main street shops -- that fascinates, enthralls and has led me to make a living analyzing and writing about retail in all its forms.

Retail is a national Rorschach test and we can tell more about our collective psyche by studying buying trends than any poll can honestly reveal. And there's no better day to take the pulse of America than Black Friday.

This day after Thanksgiving was spent in New Mexico, thanks to family retiring en mass to warmer climes. Cold, wet weather (even in the Southwest!) got people out to the mall in droves, but it's where they gravitated to that is revealing. If the new ABQ shopping destination is any indication, people are a lot choosier this year.

One thing seems clear: Apparel may be the big loser this December, although more unique and eclectic offerings should fare well. Small boutiques and chains such as Anthropologie drew enthusiastic crowds, as people sought out homey and personalized environments. And the Apple store was so crowded and full of energy you would think they are giving iPhones away. It's not just a testament to Apple's innovation and marketing expertise that they can command such consumer attention, but further proof that people will spend their (now) harder to come by money. We just need a more compelling reason to do so than wanting a new sweater from the Gap.

So, if you're looking for interesting stores to spend your gift budget in this season, you're not alone. As for apparel, well the sales should be spectacular.

Bucktown lost

Shopping on Damen in Bucktown is one of our greatest pleasures. But there have been some changes to the street of late that actually made us come to a dead stop, wondering if we'd somehow found ourselves back downtown in the Gold Coast.

Nannette Lepore's new boutique was a long time coming and seems to truly fit into its quaint neighborhood surroundings. And the Free People location on a nearby stretch of Milwaukee looks so much like the surrounding businesses (including the consignment shops) that seeing the label for a national line was a pretty big surprise.

But there is something else coming to the neighborhood, something exciting and scary at the same time: Marc Jacobs.

That's right. The man who designs some of the most coveted handbags is opening his first store in Chicago, on Damen. It's a bit odd to have taken so long to set up shop in our city, but it's really interesting that the location of choice is so far from the other posh offerings of Michigan Ave. We really would have expected Marc Jacobs to open on Oak St., with Prada and Todd's as neighbors.

Don't get us wrong, we love, love, love Marc Jacob's designs and can't wait to see entire collections (the store will carry menswear, as well) in one place, but it's the location causing trepidation. Wicker Park and Bucktown is one of the most charming and unique shopping destinations in the country. Its boutiques are independently owned and merchandise hand selected by people that interact regularly with their customers. Somehow, the arrival of a national fashion designer threatens to change all this irrevocably.

Here's hoping we're wrong.

See More Art

While high art isn’t somewhere you typically go for fashion tips, it is a great place try and spot trends that might trickle down to the broader market. That’s why last weekend’s trip to SOFA — the Sculptural Objects and Functional Art Exposition at Navy Pier — provided a wealth of insight into what to expect in home accessories and design.

In years past, colored glass and sparkling silver objects seemed to dominate the show floor, but this year marks a turn away from glossy modern and back to natural wood and interpretations of traditional crafts. Chunky burled wood pieces were made graceful in the hands of skilled artists and seemed almost fluid as tabletop vessels or as tables themselves.

Copper and gold ruled over silver and glass. Gorgeously detailed miniatures from several artists drew admirers and buyers in droves while carefully carved and detailed objects based on ancient artifacts and methods commanded some of the highest prices of the exposition, and sported red “sold” stickers as well.

Even Dale Chihuly’s latest work was a departure from prior collections. Sure that sense of whimsy was still there, but the jubilant colors were replaced with far more glum black glass with gold accents. Maybe all this reflects the more somber mood in this country and the rest of the world right now, SOFA is an International exposition, or maybe its just art.

Fall's Candle Fix

Candles infuse a room with warmth and scent, and come fall they seem as necessary as a cozy blanket and quiet evening at home. But we have a serious love/hate relationship with the flickering wonders, finding it increasingly difficult to justify spending so much on something that gets set on fire. That's why we take our candle buying seriously, searching out genuine and non-cloying scents that represent a good value. Of course, they must be pretty to look at too as it's not enough to just smell good.

That's why we love Votivo's French collection, particularly the Sumatra Lemongrass. Each comes in a terra cotta pot and releases clean, true scent perfect for the kitchen counter. This line is often overshadowed by its better-known glass jar housed sister collection but we've had good luck at Merz Apothecary (both the Lincoln Square and Macy's on State location) and Unique so Chique Boutique and Tea Room in Uptown. For less than $20, this candle is worth the effort.

Botanticus candles are a real find, and we usually find ours at Public I on Division. The "fig" scent is one of the few we've tried that really smells like figs without being sickly sweet and "tobacco leaf" is a fall and winter favorite. The travel candles are ideal for cozying up a sterile hotel room when on the road, and they won't break the bank.

But we've saved the best for last, Tatine. We were fans of candle maker Margo Breznik's beautifully crafted, hand poured candles back when she had a gorgeous shop on Division St. Now that she's moved into a studio in Wicker Park's Flat Iron building, the only why to get our Tatine fix is to visit her husband's wine shop (and Seemoreshopping.com favorite) Cellar Rat or order from the Web site. But Tatine fans rejoice: Margo's studio will be open to the public on Friday, October 12 for the neighborhood's Around the Coyote with Cellar Rat holding a free French wine tasting in the space. The studio will be open for two days only, so stock up. We plan to.

Mid Century Modern is Dead, Long Live Mid Century Modern.

After what seems like years celebrating the return of mid-century modern furniture, there's suddenly a burst of color, pattern and activity leaping out from the pages of our favorite design magazines and Web sites. Floral prints, stripes, repeating patterns and Greek Key designs are swirling about. You'd think we'd be jumping with joy after the tyranny of mid-century's clean lines.

As it turns out, not so much. In fact, all this activity seems like overkill, as if the arbiters of design are binging on color and pattern after a very long fast. Rooms are a mash up of mixed wallpapers in floral prints, rugs with geometric lines and furniture in a bevy of colors. We were weary of the dominant trend too, but what's a fashion conscious, home design novice to do?

Look for pieces that work within your existing style that might punch up a room with a splash of color. Use patterns wisely, and restrain yourself when it comes to wallpaper. There's some amazing new wallpaper patterns out there now from designers and artists, but we're not planning to do something too difficult to change when the craze passes. Using wallpaper on objects and small occasional pieces (even a file cabinet) seems like fun. Or check out local gem the White Attic for a shot of Hollywood Regency glamour, with white oriental cut out screens, lacquered pieces and mirrored vanities. It's a lot easier to embrace in small doses, and besides, that Eames era chair will never really go out of style.

Grace Boutique Store Opening Party

What could be better than a fashionable evening of shoe shopping and champagne? If the party in question is celebrating the opening of Bucktown's newest chic boutique, Grace. This elegant space is devoted to the most amazing shoes and bags from labels that were previously difficult to find in the Midwest, like Luciano Padovan and Chicago's own Elizabeth Brady. Ultra-luxe offerings from Missoni, Jean-Michel Cazabat, Anya Hindmarch, and London Sole round out the merchandise mix and lend a European flair to this jewel box of a shop.

Some of the current trends on Grace's shelves include metallics (check out the sexy mirrored pair of peep-toe pumps on owner Kristi Ryan below), patent, and animal prints. Handbag styles sat at opposite ends of the spectrum, from casually oversize leather hobos trimmed with braiding and tassels to chic little clutches. There were also few structured satchels in rich cognac and whiskey shades, as well as a bold ice blue snakeskin number.

If you're looking to treat yourself to something stylish and a little unusual that you're unlikely to see on anyone else (most of the items are exclusive to Chicago), Grace is definitely the place to go. After all, while there's nothing wrong with standbys like Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, sometimes it's nice to rock a pair of stilettos that haven't already been seen on every red carpet or Sex and the City.

Wildlife Wanders Indoors

Every home décor or gift shop we enter lately seems to be teeming with life. Wildlife, that is. Forest creatures and backyard critters are turning up everywhere from wall art to paperweights, making us wonder just what in the national psyche has spurred this trend?

But who cares really. Something this much fun shouldn’t be over analyzed lest it brings us back to the inevitable issue of global warming, changing environment and affection for potentially disappearing species.

Back to the fun. Brightly painted ceramic antler horns are doing double duty as wall hooks; baby deer are peering out from delicately painted plates by Joanna Mendicino, and an oh so cute baby birds by the same artist serve as vases. Wall decals by Blik can turn any room into a bramble patch with minimal work or commitment; the decals are easily removed or painted over when the log cabin craze passes.

Looking to add an outdoorsy touch without the animal accents? Then the faux bois trend is for you. White lacquered and intertwined branches made from anything but wood, are everywhere. In particular West Elm’s faux bois wall mirror is has design blogs abuzz and something as simple as Urban Outfitters branch jewelry stand or wall mounted, tree shaped coat racks will bring a bit of the forest in. Go one step further and light a fire in your very own faux campfire – a battery operated votive sized white ceramic campfire designed by David Weeks for Kikkerland, and available at Willow.

It’s trend in home décor that is either disturbing or sweet, depending on how you look at it. We choose sweet. It rhymes with tweet goes better with that bird bud vase.

Urban Outfitters outfits the home

We’ve still not quite over this “back to school” kick, but it’s early September now and the real kids are back in school. So, we headed out to the one store that perennially feels like the first stop for dorm dwellers – Urban Outfitters.

This fall fever is fueled in part by a new home that’s more than twice the size of the last one. There are whole rooms to fill and frankly not a big enough budget. In particular, there’s a guest room/office and the classic, long Chicago apartment hallway in desperate need of key pieces and decoration.

And why not thumb our noses at the pending winter and encroaching cold and darkness with bright colors and whimsy? For that Urban Outfitters is a favorite source. The store is clearly benefiting from its older sister, Anthropologie’s, home décor focus but with a more affordable emphasis.

Hot pink antler wall hooks look great in the front hall, the perfect place to set a winter cap. And the selection of wildly colorful tapestries and bedspreads take care of the hallway dilemma. A stop at the art supply store on the way home for canvas stretchers will turn bed coverings into wall coverings for a relative pittance.

Flocked lampshades, shag rugs and chandeliers are tempting but the white tulip side tables with enameled designs are true steals at $29, and the mid century sofa will help ground all these wild patterns in solid colors and sensible Danish design. Plus it works as a daybed for the guestroom. No one will ever no it all cost the equivalent of month’s allowance instead of a paycheck.

Back to School

No matter how old we get, this time of year we always fall under the spell of “back to school.” The lure of book bags, agendas, notebooks and new shoes is so strong that we would almost trade our grown up responsibilities for exams and adolescent anxiety.
We said almost.
The next best thing is back to school shopping without the school, or students for that matter, so we succumbed to the call and headed to Target. By Labor Day, shelves may be a bit picked over but there are still some great finds to be had like the self adhesive floating mirrors, colored throws and office supplies so cute you won’t regret getting to work.
Target’s cheap chic sometimes overdoes tired trends like capiz shells – still abundant in plates, candleholders and of course lamp shades. Instead seek out the Victoria Hagen collection, newly refreshed for fall with uber stylish bronze finished pieces and Asian influenced accent tables.
We can’t resist a well-designed bargain and the Isaac Mizrachi fall collection had just arrived and was hanging on mobile racks waiting to be stocked, giving us first dibs on sizes and colors. Skip the jumper in bright red with the hard to work zipper and focus instead on the work appropriate trousers in cropped lengths. We plan on pairing it with our new shoe boots for our own version of a back to school outfit. Now if only the unrelenting heat would let up.

Country music and high fashion are an unlikely pair, but last Friday, Macy's Glamorama proved that opposites do attract with a fabulous celebration that included fall fashion from Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, Donna Karan, and more, along with a performance by country super-group Muzik Mafia (including Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich, and Cowboy Troy).

The fashion highlight of the red carpet had to be Iron Chef Cat Cora's chocolate brown and cobalt satin Donna Karan dress (she was the chef behind all the delicious food at the afterparty), but the real couture treats were on the runway - we loved the sleek Calvin Klein gowns in shades of charcoal and asphalt, the feminine chiffon dresses and vintage inspired capelets from Temperley London. Alberta Ferreti's swingy a-line jackets and stunning chiffon gowns rounded out our fashion favorites.

The men weren't left out either - their options included distressed bomber jackets and chunky sweaters from John Varvatos, colorful prints from Moschino, and luxurious shearling jackets by Cavalli. There were also plenty of plush furs on hand for male and female fashionistas from the Macy's Fur Vault.

Of course, Glamorama is also about the music - all the members of the Muzik Mafia performed, and they brought the house down and received a standing ovation (and this from a crowd that was probably not particularly country music-savvy). Afterwards, the performers, the models, and the actors that walked the red carpet all joined Chicago's most fashionable at the after-party, held in the Macy's State Street store.

We were particularly impressed at the transformation the department received - the entire 7th floor was converted in a country-western paradise, and revelers partied well into the night, fueled by drinks from Bacardi, Budweiser, and other sponsors. The BBQ-themed menu designed by the aforementioned Cat Cora was memorable as well, along with the accompanying soundtrack provided by DJ Ruckus (Lenny Kravitz's younger brother). All in all, Macy's did an excellent job creating a night to remember - and it was all for a good cause (proceeds went the Art Institute.

Saturday Shopping in Bucktown

This past Saturday was a good day for Chicago shoppers to head to the Bucktown/Wicker Park area - the Beta Boutique Stacked Rack Sale was going on, a new accessories boutique had opened up, and many of the area's hip shops have their spring and summer merchandise discounted.

First, we hit up the Stacked Rack Sale, held in a gallery space on Damen Avenue filled with racks stacked with designer goodies for a steal (seriously, nothing was over $100). Chicago labels like Doris Ruth, Blake Standard, and Kathryn Kerrigan were featured, along with big names like Betsy Johnson and J-Brand jeans. Be sure to keep an eye on Beta Boutique's website for notification of the next Stacked Rack Sale.

Next, we headed up Damen towards Grace, a new spot for high end shoes and handbags. Owner Kristi Ryan stocks a stunning assortment of Anya Hindmarch, Jean-Micheal Cazabat, and Luciano Padovan heels, as well as plenty of adorable shoes by Chicago's own Elizabeth Brady . Afterwards, we checked out the sales at Michelle Tan and Language (up to 80% off summer merchandise - even though it's mid-August, now is a good time to stock up for next year!).

After all that shopping, we were ready for lunch - so we headed to Hot Chocolate, home of delicious desserts and an excellent weekend brunch. It's an excellent place to relax and compare notes after a day in Bucktown - or to grab a gourmet snack in between shops.

WTMX "The Mix" hosted another Style File event last night, this time at AG Jeans in the Gold Coast. As usual, See More Shopping was in attendance, handing out maps and checking all the hot new denim styles from AG. One of the highlights was the new AG For Entourage collection, which was inspired by the hit HBO series. Comprised of sleek straight leg jeans and ultra-soft cotton graphic tees, these are perfect for the Entourage fan in your life.

As usual, Little Black Dress and Virgin Vines were serving their delicious vino, and Mexican eatery Zocalo provided the snacks. Tees, jeans, and other gifts were raffled off through out the evening, including a stunning Grecian style little black dress by local designer Cyndi Chan.

Sidewalk Sale at the Daley Plaza

Today See More Shopping attended the Sidewalk Sale at the Daley Plaza - yes, the weather was hot, but the fashion was hotter at this sale and fashion show featuring some of Chicago's newest designers.

Two of the more unique attendees included Kate Boggiano (http://www.kateboggiano.com/), a company that focuses exclusively on chic, feminine tops and blouses, and Serpico (http://www.serpico-collection.com/), a new label designed by Melissa Serpico, a recent graduate of the Art Institute with a sleek, architectural feel. Delicate jewelry crafted from semi-precious stones by Erin Gallagher (http://www.egjewelry.com/) and hip leather bags by BoqUe (http://www.boque.com/) rounded out the stylish mix.

See More Shopping Event: July 10th

Today See More Shopping hosted an event in the beautiful plaza at 233 North Michigan Ave. Fortunately, the thunderstorms held off until the event was over (although we always that serious shoppers are not affected by little things like the weather!), and plenty of fun and some great deals were had by all.

First of all, the vendors at this event included Elements by Lori (handcrafted jewelry and beautiful silk skirts that can be worn in a myriad of different ways), distinctive and sparkly jewelry from CC Bella, and Thai pashmina shawls, handbags, and home decor pieces by It's a Wrap Imports. You can See More of the offerings at this event here. Besides the fabulous fashion, there was live music and delicious free food from the China Grill.

Last night See More Shopping attended the The Mix Style File (http://www.wtmx.com/) at Mark Shale in the 900 Building on Michigan Avenue.

A girl can't live on boutique fashion alone, so this weekend See More Shopping decided to see what was on hand at the big designer discount stores - Marshalls, Filene's Basement, and TJ Maxx.

Marshalls: The clothes were pretty lackluster, but the shoe and bag selection was stellar. Lots of metallics and jeweled sandals by brands like Charles David, Via Spiga, and Franco Sarto. We also spotted some cute neutral pumps by Calvin Klein on the clearance rack. There were bags on hand in every color of the rainbow, including some cute animal print satchels. Our verdict: Stick the accessories.

Filene's Basement: We stopped by both the Michigan Avenue and Loop locations, and the stock was fairly similar. The Michigan Avenue one may be slightly better if you're on the lookout for premium denim, however - we spotted tons of jeans by Antik, Hudson, Paper, Denim, & Cloth, and J Brand. The State Street location wins out in every other category, though, and it's just more organized. Major steals: lots of Diane Von Furstenberg dresses (including some classic black wraps and a sexy red style with a sweetheart neckline) - most under $150, C&C California t-shirt dresses in a variety of bright colors for $40 or under, and tons of printed jersey dresses for $20-30 - these are perfect casual Friday looks. Our verdict: the finds at Filene's are worth the hunt.

TJ Maxx: The TJ Maxx on State Street is large and generally well-stocked, but it is almost disorganized. This was definitely the case this weekend, but if you're patient and willing to dig a little, you'll be rewarded with some great deals on brands like DKNY and Max Studio. Like Filene's, there were plenty of printed jersey dresses, along with some cute, summery cotton skirts and embroidered tops. There is also a decent selection of swimwear, including some Vix bikinis. Our verdict: Not for the faint of heart, but your efforts could be well worth it.

Yesterday, your fearless See More Shopping fashion editor checked out one of the newest and coolest salons in Bucktown, Twisted Scissors. Owned by a trio of stylists who met while working at Big Hair in Roscoe Village, this salon's unique combination of tattoo-inspired art, pin-up girl glamour, and cozy atmosphere should ensure that it sticks around for a while. Plus, their prices are excellent, the music is great, and they serve PBR or wine while you're getting your hair done.

This is the place to go if you're looking for a hip, up-the-minute haircut and/or color, but don't let the bold, colorful looks that some of the stylists have fool you - they can also do natural highlights and sleek, elegant coifs. Personally, I got exactly what I wanted - a modern, choppy cut and a full head of natural looking highlights - and I enjoyed hanging out with the friendly, cool chicks at Twisted Scissors.

Today, the fabulous fashionistas of See More Shopping checked out the many fun, funky stores on Division Street, including Penelope's, Plein Aire, New'd, and Casa de Soul. First, however, we stopped at Chicago's first certified organic restaurant, Crust. The flatbread pizzas are delicious and it has an adorable patio (which was sadly too full for us to eat there - it's a busy place). It's definitely worth checking out even if you're not a health nut.

Casa de Soul, Chicago's own conceptual lifestyle boutique, had tons of great pieces, including satin trenches and slinky tops by local designer Cyndi Chan, quirky-glam looks by Ana Fong, and cozy bamboo dresses and tunics from Soca. They've got plenty of trunk shows coming up as well, so check back to see what's new at the Casa.

Next on the list was New'd, a re-sale boutique that looks promising (they had a like-new Prada bag and jeans by popular labels like Rogan and Seven), but the stock seemed a little thin. They do buy lightly-used pieces, so bring in your rarely worn pieces and trade them for something you love.

Penelope's has lots of colorful tees and dresses by LA Made and other California labels, including some extra-long hoodies that are perfectly casual and cool. The real highlight of the place, however, is the two adorable pugs who love to meet new customers.

Last but not least was Plein Aire, where we found lots of cute summer dresses and the perfect pair of wide leg jeans (something that your fashion editor has been on a long-running quest for). Deep dark blue with carefully placed pockets, these comfy jeans by Goldsign are just the ticket for next fall.

Of course, Plein Aire is located right next to Caffe Gelato, so we couldn't resist stopping in for some of their delicious Italian gelato. A perfect end to a great afternoon!

Don't miss this sample sale - presented by the experienced professionals from Lazar Media, this sale features merchandise from three elite designers: Isaac Mizrahi, Anthony Nak, and Reem Acra.

Like all savvy shoppers, we love a good sale, so today we checked out the fantastic sale at Language (http://www.shoplanguage.com/) in Bucktown. Much of the boutique's fabulous merchandise is marked down, so we picked up two dresses for a steal - one deep red, very tailored Lewis Cho dress with a vintage bent, and one black cotton jersey frock with a draped neckline that's perfect for hot summer days.

Other great sale items included the Spencer dress by Fluet (on the right), the Kimono dress by Geren Ford (center) and the Sabrina dress by Abaete(on the left).

After stopping at Feast for lunch (note to brunch afficionados: they serve their delicious breakfast food all day!), we headed to Beta Boutique, where every day is a special discount day. Fortunately, we caught the tale end of their Summer Stock-Up sale, featuring an extra 20% off summer dresses and shoes, as well as a buy one, get the 2nd 50% off on all their sale items. There are piles of bargains on hand, including some casual cool Tufi Duek cotton jersey dresses and pretty little tanks in cotton candy colors.

If your summer wardrobe needs a boost, head to Bucktown and pick up some stylish pieces for a steal.

Style Fusion: Streets of Chicago. See More Shopping Blog.

Last night I (along with Carol from Second City Style) attended the Style Fusion: Streets of Chicago fashion show at the Kit Kat Club in Lakeview. Featuring the work of local designers and the ultra creative stylists at the Sin Qua Non salon, all the proceeds from this fashion show benefited the Howard Brown Health Center. It's nice when fashiony things promote good causes, and it's even nicer when said events end up being so fun.

I was very impressed by the gorgeous hair and makeup on the models, especially some of the intricately curled and braided updos. Think hairstyling as a form of artistic expression and you'll get the picture. Clothes-wise, there were some slinky little black dresses (Grecian inspired and very sexy) and some seventies inspired (they kind of reminded me of Michelle Pfeiffer's look in Scarface) white satin and gold ensembles, along with a wild collage of colorful clothes worn by professional break dancers. Obviously, this was not your typical fashion show.

Laura Boton, the owner of Sin Qua Non Salon, says “I am always amazed at what the style teams put together. The stylists this year twisted and fused their innocent childhood memories with their adult avant-garde realities. I am involved with the training and career direction of my stylists on a daily basis, but for the show, I step aside and let them create." An excellent decision, if the crowd's enthuastic response to their amazing creations is any indication.

Yesterday See More Shopping checked out the latest boutique to open on Armitage, SHE (http://www.dare2she.com/). "SHE" stands for She Has Everything, and the boutique definitely caters to the discerning and stylish shopper.

SHE is the place to go for the trendy denim labels, such as Ditto (cute embroidery on the back pockets and skinny jeans in technicolor shades) and Anlo (trouser style in dark washes). They've also got pretty silk tops in summery pastel shades, delicate sundresses, and Alvin Valley pants with sexy leather waistbands (Alvin Valley is a personal favorite - these pants will make anyone's legs look a mile long).

We also stopped into Mint Julep (they had some great Diane Von Furstenberg dresses on sale - get there fast!) and Lori's Shoes, where we spotted tons of cute cork wedges by brands like Oh Deer! and Steve Madden. Colorful patent leather pumps and jeweled flat sandals were also on hand, along with bold printed silk headbands.

While we shopped on Armitage, See More noticed that the much-anticipated Blo salon had opened up - it's owned by the fabulous Elizabeth Floerscheimer, who brought us Eliana Lily in Old Town, and offers $20 blowouts (hence the name), among other services. We can't wait to stop in!

New Stores in Old Town

If you haven't been to Old Town lately, this is the perfect time of year for a visit. Spend a quiet afternoon sitting at one of the many outdoor cafes, then walk along North Wells St., from Division St. to Lincoln Ave., for great shopping.

Two new reasons to visit Old Town are the recent openings of Gray Boutique and One Yellow Shoe.

We're impressed with the selection of women's clothing and accessories at Gray. With a store already in Winnetka, it's no surprise that they're a great fit for this neighborhood. Some of our favorite finds include this black and white print spaghetti-strapped sundress by Anac ($194) and Cynthia Steffe white mini-trench ($328), perfect for work or with jeans.

One Yellow Shoe carries affordably-priced, fashionable shoes for work and week-end. These white patent, cork platform wedges from Oh Deer ($89) will go perfectly with your cool summer outfits.

Stop in the next time you're in Old Town. Both stores are definitely worth the visit.
